1.    "Geometries" 2018, colored pencil on paper, 50 inches W X 38 inches H. In the upper left corner of Geometries, I’ve replicated two paintings by Hurvin Anderson (b. 1965), a contemporary British artist similarly invested in representing the convergence of memory and history. I experience the geometric patterns Anderson painted into his work as screens, filters, and gateways, foregrounded objects between the viewer and the work that becomes the work. Extracting and elaborating these geometries to fill the remainder of the paper, I isolate the double star pattern as a subject worthy of individual attention. Steeped in myriad histories, the double intersecting star is associated with the sacred geometry in mystical traditions, wherein it’s known as a merkaba and symbolizes the interdimensional nature of the spirit/body.
